Coal Tar is a thick, black, viscous fluid generated during the carbonization of coal to convert it into coke in a recovery-type coke oven plant. Coal tar accounts for around 3.5-4% of volume of Coke produced.

Applications

Depending on the type of application, coal tar can be treated differently for different purposes. The Coal Tar can be dehydrated through the Fractional Distillation process to produce several downstream value-added products such as:

Coal Tar Pitch: The key product of the distillation of coal tar is Coal Tar Pitch which can be further processed to form Binder Pitch, Impregnated Pitch. These materials are used in the manufacturing of graphite electrodes which are used in the production of aluminium and steel
Carbon Black: Carbon black which is used in rubber and tyre industries is manufactured from Carbon black oil
Naphthalene: Naphthalene produced during the distillation of coal tar is crude in nature. Crude Naphthalene is used in the production of tanning agents, household disinfectants etc. It undergoes further fractional distillation to produce some downstream products like sulphonated naphthalene (SNF) and Poly Carboxylate Ether (PCE). PCE is used as a superplasticizer in concrete production
Refined Naphthalene: Obtained from its crude form, refined naphthalene is white, crystalline and aromatic in nature. It is often used as fumigants in pesticides and as chemical intermediates
Advance Carbon Material: Subsequent dehydration of Coal Tar produces high quality anode material for Li ion battery that is used to power Electric Vehicles, consumer devices like Smartphones, and Energy Storage devices
Sulphonated Naphthalene Formaldehyde (SNF): SNF, produced from the fractional distillation of Crude Napthalene, is used as a raw material in different construction industries as it is cost-effective and enhances cement workability
Specialty Oils: Different fractions of oils like Carbon Black Oil, Anthracene Oil are also produced during the process of distillation of Coal Tar.
